The Book

The Job Behind the Job

What leadership really requires when you're finally in the chair.

Written through the lens of a K-12 superintendent, this is a book about the work that happens beneath the title — earning trust, understanding an organization before trying to change it, navigating difficult decisions, developing others, and carrying the weight of leadership.

The challenges may look different across organizations, but the work of leadership is remarkably similar. Whether you lead a school, district, business, nonprofit, department, or team, leadership ultimately comes down to people, relationships, culture, trust, courage, and the decisions we make when there is no perfect answer.

Because leadership isn't simply about what you accomplish. It's about what becomes possible in others because you were there.

About Neal

A Leadership Journey Built Through Growth

Neal entered K-12 education in 2003 after beginning his professional career in the private sector, where early management, training, and leadership development experiences helped shape his approach to leading people.

Beginning as a classroom teacher, Neal continued to grow through building-level administration, district leadership, service as a Deputy Superintendent, and ultimately Superintendent of Schools. Along the way, each role broadened his perspective on developing people, strengthening organizations, and leading meaningful change.

Together with his wife of 32 years, Martha, he has also co-owned several successful business ventures, adding an entrepreneurial perspective to his leadership experience.

Because leadership isn't simply about what you accomplish. It's about what becomes possible in others because you were there.
